Validation of answers with missing exponents

In the following example the student has forgotten to type in the exponent after ^. Maxima allows a unary plus in an exponent, but the validation shown by Stack is wrong.

I think this is an issue with tex output in STACK specifically.

OK - I've done some more digging.

If you use desktop/command line maxima and set

simp:false;
tex1(x^+y);

then you get output x+^{y} which is the minimal way to reproduce the issue - it's not really a STACK bug, but is also a problem in core Maxima with simp:false, and so should probably be fixed there first.
